The Exorcism of Emily Rose

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is this week’s newest release at the Essex Outlet Cinemas. The print ads and tv commercials for this seem to be pushing the movie as a companion piece, i.e., rip-off of The Exorcist. I can’t help but wonder how many people seeing this are going to be disappointed, not because it isn’t a good film, but because it is not The Exorcist. Sure, there is an exorcism, but the focus of the story is whether the Catholic priest (played by Tom Wilkerson) was guilty of negligent homicide in the course of his duties.

Laura Linney is the reluctant defense attorney who is given the task of proving that Father Moore is not a complete nutjob. The prosecutor is played by Campbell Scott, who has little to do but looked constipated, but he does it so well. He is so pretty it is hard to imagine he is the result of mixing George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst’s DNA.

Anyway, if you like courtroom drama and a dash of non-traditional horror (meaning there isn’t any gore), then you’ll enjoy The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Just don’t expect any head-turning.
